The Mathematics Department aims to teach pupils of all attainment levels to understand the importance of mathematics and numeracy in everyday life. To facilitate this, pupils follow a programme of study based on prior attainment that stretches and challenges them appropriately, and that contains opportunities to work on real life problems.
Years 7 and 8
In years 7 and 8 pupils are taught in two bands – Alpha and Beta.
Pupils in tutor groups B, D, F and J are in the Alpha band. Pupils in N, S and T make up the Beta band. Pupils are set at the beginning of Year 7 based on prior attainment at Key Stage 2 and initial assessment. Setting is regularly reviewed to ensure pupils follow a scheme of work that is of an appropriate level of challenge.

At the end of each half term pupils are assessed on the work covered in that time period. Pupils in Years 7 and 8 take mid-term assessments twice a year that cover all work to that date.
Year 7 – February and May/June
Year 8 – December and May/June.
Pupils in Alpha 1 and Beta 1 are given the opportunity to take part in the UKMT Maths Challenge – a nationwide competition. This takes place in April.
Years 9,10 and 11
In years 9, 10 and 11 pupils are set in two equal ability bands, X and Y. There are 4 sets in each of the bands in Years 9 and 10, and 5 sets in each in Year 11.
The additional set in Year 11 allows pupils to study in smaller groups, receiving additional help where necessary. Progress in Years 9 and 10 determines the setting for Year 11.
Pupils study GCSE mathematics at Higher or Foundation level. All examinations are sat in the summer of Year 11.
The Higher paper enables pupils to attain grades 4 to 9.
The Foundation paper enables pupils to attain grades 1 to 5.
Pupils cannot take a combination of Higher and Foundation.
Tier of entry is decided in Year 11 based upon attainment to date and in consultation with the pupils to ensure they sit the examination that is most appropriate for them.
Pupils in X1 and Y1 of years 9,10 and 11 are offered the opportunity to enter the UKMT Maths Challenge – a nationwide competition. This takes place in November.
Pupils in Years 10 and 11 are also offered the opportunity to go to the Maths Inspirational Talks run by the Further Maths Network. These usually take place in March in the City of Bath.
Pupils in 11X1 and 11Y1 are given the opportunity to study an FSMQ in Additional Maths (OCR). This level 3 course builds upon GCSE and bridges the gap between GCSE and A level maths. Some pupils opt to take the examination in June of year 11, others just to study the course as this enhances their understanding of the higher grade topics at GCSE.

Past papers are available on the shared area of the VLE along with other resources. Past paper packs are sold through the department at a cost that covers photocopying. GCSE Revision guides are also sold through the Finance Office (a letter can be obtained from the Maths Department).
All pupils need to attend maths lessons fully equipped with:
Pens, pencils, a ruler, a protractor, a pair of compasses and a scientific calculator (we recommend the Casio fx-83 GT plus).
All equipment may be purchased in the library at school.
Mymaths.co.uk – a subscription site that all pupils are given individual passwords for. (This is sometimes used to set homework).
